Public Education in Public Hands
We undersigned demand the University of Strathclyde immediately make moves to cut ties with Study Group International.
Do you know that the University of Strathclyde currently has a partnership with a company called Study Group International? Their contract with the University states that they are to take on international students and give them a year of education at the Strathclyde campus. Their claim is that they will provide their students with an option to take on an actual Strathclyde University course once their foundation course is complete. They gain the legitimacy to do this through the guise of being part of the University – they are not.
Private companies have a track record of exploiting students, they providing little support, zero academic governance or quality assurance for teaching, charge up to £20,000 per annum for fees, and finally, they leave students hanging once their course completes. This is what the privatisation of higher education looks like.
Complete public ownership of Education – its governance and delivery – is the only way to ensure that standards, student support, and staff terms & conditions are upheld. The university has a duty of care to all students, to ensure they receive the same standards of education, support and guidance across the board. A partnership with a private educational pathway provider, such as Study Group International, undermines what students’ associations and trades unions have fought hard for over many years and puts the future of academia and academic career paths in jeopardy.
If you agree with the above and want to see the University discontinue their contracts with privately funded education schemes, please sign the petition below:
