University Policies and Procedures

Your university experience is governed by a whole host of university policies and procedures, most of which the average student will never be aware of. Sometimes however, you'll encounter a problem with your studies or have questions about the way you're being taught or the things you are expected to do. Whatever question you have, there's likely to be a policy in place to deal with it.Listed below are some of the most common University policies and procedures. Postgraduates should also consult the Postgraduates page for policies specific to PG studies. If you don't find anything here that answers your concerns, or need clarification on how the policies affect you, please don't hesitate to contact the Ask Advice Centre on 0141 567 5042/3 or Ask@theunion.strath.ac.uk, or drop in to their offices on Level 5 of the Union or behind Toby's at Jordanhill. See the Ask pages for more information about their service.

Academic Appeals

If you are considering appealing against your exam results then you should seek support in drafting your letter of appeal from the Ask Advice Centre. Students at the Education Faculty or who are appealing to Senate are entitled to represent themselves in person and/or have a representative accompany them to their appeal hearing. If you are thinking of doing this, please do come and see an Ask4 advisor. The Ask guide to Academic Appeals outlines thoroughly the appeals process. In addition to this, Registry have produced some appeals leaflets, which can be accessed at the links below:

Intellectual Property Rights

In general, your intellectual property (ie, the work you produce while at uni), belongs to you. You department should not use it, for example to show to an external company or to display on a website, without your consent. Exceptions to this rule arise if, as a condition of your funding, you have agreed to forfeit your intellectual property rights. This may apply if you are not funded either privately or by your LEA. You will not necessarily be aware of having 'signed' these rights away, they will usually be in the small print of your contract of matriculation or as a condition of your acceptance of funding. In this case, your contract of matriculation or your funding contract will have to be examined to discern who has rights to your work.If you are concerned about the use or potential use of your work by the university or any associated agency, please contact Al Wilson, Democratic Services Co-ordinator for advice in the first instance on 0141 567 5049 by e-mail at alwilson@theunion.strath.ac.uk.
