Convenor of Clubs & Societies – Claire Loudon Claire

Me

My name is Claire Loudon, I’m 20 and in my third year of a Forensic Biology degree and I’m running for the position of convenor of clubs and societies.

Why pick me?

I have been involved in the union for the past year on the welcome team, the ask advice service and the clubs and societies executive. I’m also a member of SRC and am on the advice and support committee. This gives me the perfect background for running clubs and societies as I already know how the union system works.

What do I plan to do?

In my year as clubs convenor I plan to raise the profile of clubs and societies and increase membership of existing clubs whilst encouraging students to found new clubs and societies. I also hope to make clubs and societies even more accessible for first year students to encourage them to become involved with the union.

IainAcademic Affairs Officer - Iain Delworth

Hi, I am Iain Delworth and am a 3rd year Marketing and Environmental Science (TBS) student. I have been involved in the Union since I started University and have been the Halls Convener, Convener of Communications and Marketing and am currently Training Team Convener, I have also campaigned to bring back Book Trader and sit on the University’s Student Experience Committee.

I believe that as our University is becoming more commercialised we, as students, are not seeing the benefits associate with it. It can be seen in many ways, such as poor feedback from coursework, teaching staff that do not have the time to help because of the research they are doing or simply bureaucratic procedures that impair students getting the most out of Strathclyde.

Things need to change.

To do so I pledge to:
  • Reform the class and course rep program to ensure effective representation
  • Lobby and work with University staff on student issues
  • Campaign on issues such as the library, student debt and better levels of service

I have the experience and dedication to fulfil my pledges and be an effective member of the Executive and most importantly get things done.

FREE THE EDUCATION!

PhilipWhyAcademic Affairs Officer - Philip Whyte

Hi, I’m Philip and I’m a 21 year old Politics and Law student. For the past year I’ve been your Academic Affairs Officer, fighting tirelessly at university, local and national levels to ensure you get the best deal. Since coming to Strathclyde, I’ve been an active member of the debates society, sat on SRC, representing students, and mixing fun in the bars of the union with hard work to ensure you never get neglected or forgotten.

If elected, I will…
  • Continue to work with senior university figures to improve the student representative structure, ensuring your voice is always heard.
  • Continue work on the Jordanhill move and ensure that we have a campus to be proud of.
  • Carry on the fight for an improved, centralised support centre, ensuring students’ needs are met and you have the support you deserve.
  • Push for change in the Union by working on its governance structures so as we all have a union we are proud of and that works the way students want it to.

I care about academic affairs, and your needs. If given the chance I’ll never forget the thousands of students on campus and only fight for what you want. We work for you!

This candidate is also standing for NUS Conference delegate

Student Media and Marketing Officer - Craig McAulay Craig

I am Craig McAulay - a 2nd Year IBML student - and in the position of Student Media and Marketing Officer, I aim to make my experience count. As Convenor of the Student Marketing Team I know the workings of the group from my own first-hand experience in addition to working closely with the other media groups under the SMMO’s responsibility.

This year the SMT has been working very closely with the Strathclyde Telegraph to improve its advertising opportunities, publicity and distribution; which serves me well in learning about the way the paper operates. As SMMO my intention is to facilitate the best communication and integration between the media groups while working with them to create effective work-plans for the year ahead. The most important work-plan will be for the Fusion radio group, which requires the best possible guidance while going through its’ re-launch.

With SRC experience of submitting motions, I would also be perfectly equipped to represent both students and the media groups on the Executive. In addition to the relevant experience, I also have the fresh enthusiasm required to work with the media groups, which is why I believe I make the ideal candidate for SMMO!

Student Media and Marketing Officer - Paul O'Hare Paul

In 1776 in The Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith the world renowned economist wrote that the needs of producers should be considered only with regard to meeting the needs of consumers.

The consumer is you the student, therefore if elected I promise to put your needs at the forefront of all that I do while striving to develop Strathclyde as a brand that can be used to enhance your Strathclyde experience.

To execute this mission I promise to achieve the following goals:

·        Maximise participation in student media facilities to maximise benefit to students
·        Generate real momentum in the growth of our existing media groups
·        Make the launch of “Fusion” a priority to ensure successful future growth
·        Review current marketing and ensure a sustainable long-term strategy is in place
·        Champion “Strathclyde” as a brand through our media, creating links with the commercial sector to provide training and employment opportunities for students

I have management experience working with a major brand driven company for over 7 years and understand strong branding can generate many benefits, both tangible and intangible. This will be the driving force behind delivering my promises.

NaziaEqual Opportunities Officer - Nazia Iqbal

As a first year student studying pharmacy I believe I can bring new ideas and originality to the union. If elected as equal opportunities officer I will campaign to raise awareness of equality issues. As a member of a minority group I have dealt with inequality on a personal level and feel my experiences will feed into this position. I plan to work with minority groups to ensure that they are able to take full advantage of everything their union has to offer. My main aim as equal opportunities officer will be to allow students to make the best of their student life regardless of race, religion, gender or any other grouping. Since arriving at university I have been actively involved in Strathclyde's Stop the War Coalition and SUMSA. Not only has this enabled me to become involved in a number of campaigns but it has also increased my awareness of current global issues. If I feel there is injustice in regards to any issue, person, group, I'm not afraid to stand up and make my voice heard. That is why I believe myself to be a suitable candidate for this position.

DavidEqual Opportunities Officer - David McDonald

I am David McDonald, a second year Economics student, and I am standing for Equal Opportunities Officer. This past year I have been the EOO and I want to build on what I have achieved so far. I have been able to achieve many of the points in my manifesto and more, including: getting convenors for 5 out of the 6 groups in my remit; get the Equal Opportunities Committee to meet and deal with policy matters and have organised new events such as the Holocaust Memorial Service and the Alternative Welcome. Furthermore I have carried out general Executive duties and supported other members of the Executive with their own events.

My aims for next year are:

  • To work with group convenors to increase membership and participation.
  • Raise awareness of issues of equality among students, the university and outside bodies.
  • Ensure liberations campaigning occurs throughout the year.
  • Continue with my work Executive and as Equal Opportunities Officer, building on last years base.

I am the candidate with the knowledge and experience, which makes me the best choice for Equal Opportunities Officer.

RichardEqual Opportunities Officer - Yiqin Shen (Richard)

Hello, everybody. I’m Richard, and my Chinese name is YIQIN SHEN. I’m a 3rd year student. My major is Maths and statistics. I hope to become Equal Opportunities Officer. I have confidence to raise awareness of equality issues and represent under-represented groups. Also, encourages more active participation.

LeighAnneJordanhill Officer - Leigh-Anne Fyfe

My goal as Jordanhill officer would be to make the most of the campus’ links with the rest of the university, whilst also making the most of Jordanhill’s unique and fortunate status as a separate and close-knit community in its own right.

I would want to listen carefully to the students, addressing issues that make student life that little bit harder: things like not being able to eat lunch with your friends if you have brought a packed lunch, or being squished on campus bus journeys.

I would like Jordanhill to become more environmentally friendly, and would, for example, place emphasis on more recycling facilities and the possibilities of electronic assessment submission.

Jordanhill is a great facility with a wealth of students who are caring and passionate and I would want to help them get involved in campaigns and events in aid of the many good causes we can contribute to.

Overall I want to work to increase Jordanhill’s already brilliant reputation as a good learning and social environment, to recognise and make the most of the diversity of Jordanhill students: to make it a paradigm of accessibility and dedication to an excellent learning experience.
