While I am new to Glasgow and Strathclyde, having arrived from Ireland last September, I have very quickly become immersed in Union activities. I am a postgraduate representative on the Students' Representatives Council (SRC), President of the Human Ecology Society, and a member of both Strathclyde People and Planet and Ecodemia Strathclyde.
I helped to write several motions which were passed at SRC recently, and would love to remain working with the Union and University to ensure that positive changes are made to enact these motions and to improve environmental sustainability and social justice in this University.
I am currently doing a Masters degree in Human Ecology. With an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and English, and 3 years experience as manager of a very busy health food store, I have excellent lateral thinking, communication and organisational skills.
As Vice President of Support and Campaigns, I would endeavour to:
- ensure and safeguard the welfare of every Strathclyde student
- ensure advice and support is available to all students
- work with the Centre for Human Ecology, the Sustainability Committee, and other relevant bodies to improve Strathclyde's environmental and ethical performance
Hi, my name is Stacy Hendron and I am currently in my fourth year studying politics at the fabulous Strathclyde! I am running for the position of VP Support and Campaigns. I feel that I am the only candidate for the job because I have the skills, knowledge and energy to make a valuable contribution to your Student’s Association and make it somewhere for students to be proud of. For the duration of my university career I have been an enthusiastic and dedicated Nightline volunteer, helping to both improve the service and organise advertising and fundraising campaigns. In addition I have played an active role on your Student Representative Council as Nightline Convenor for the past two years; I therefore recognise the importance of the Council and its capacity to represent all students. I will develop the support facilities already in place and improve them based on what students want. I will also run awareness campaigns on student safety and provide opportunities for students to learn how to be safer both on and off campus. For the most part, I want to help make your time at Strathclyde as enjoyable and fun an experience as I possibly can!
My name is Martin Law, and I’m a 21 year-old mathematics student. I didn’t get involved in the Union until my final year, and I realise now that there are so many good things I still want to do to improve university life for all students at Strathclyde; that’s why I’m running for Vice President Support & Campaigns.
I aim to:
- Run a Green Campaign, where students can find out how big their carbon footprint is and how to reduce it, get hold of some locally-sourced produce, and maybe an energy-saving lightbulb or two!
- Build on the current VPSC’s highly successful social nights for international students, making it easy for new international students to meet new people;
- Ensure that Jordanhill students have access to a quality welfare service, including an on-campus ASK service at least one day a week;
- Run a regular “blood walk” across the city, to encourage students to donate blood and help save lives;
- Have recycling bins on every floor of every building on both campuses;
Help students be aware of the volunteering and social possibilities open to them, and encourage them to get involved with all goings-on in the Union
My name is John McKee, I’m from the Law, Arts and Social Sciences Faculty and I’m running to be your Vice President of Support and Campaigns. I have been the Convenor for LGBT, serve as a member of SRC representing students and I have served on the Equal Opportunities Committee.
1. I am passionately concerned about Student Welfare, specifically in making sure we press for Endowment Fees to be scrapped and to lobby for Free Prescriptions for Students.
2. I want to make sure students are informed and educated about their Tenancy Rights so they aren’t ripped off by dodgy Landlords.
3. I will commit to creating an Inter-faith forum so that students of all faiths and none can have an action group to join together and take action in order to promote community understanding and cohesion.
4. I want to build on the success of the wellbeing fair by extending it to include a sports section.
5. I want to help international students by lobbying and negotiating with Banks to help them get set up in the country with an account and to inform students on the easiest way to go about it.
VOTE MCKEE FOR VPSC !!!!!!! :)
Unlike many of the candidates standing in the elections I have had little involvement in the union until this, my final year at university. It wasn’t until becoming an ASK volunteer that I realised there’s more to the union than TFI! I now wish I’d gotten involved earlier as I’ve met new people and had a great time! With this in mind I ask you to vote for me, I’ll bring to the position a fresh perspective on a variety of student issues. I will work with the VPSD and together we’ll strive to encourage volunteering and by doing so supply you with skills useful for life after graduation I will also work tirelessly to improve student awareness of welfare issues which affect you daily, letting you know that there are people within the union who care and can help you! I would also continue to encourage involvement of our international students as the union is a great way to make friends and to experience a new country. Finally I aim to bring back Book Trader, a valuable service which enables you to sell unwanted textbooks. So please on election day, Vote Rachel Milligan for Vice President Support and Campaigns.
Karen is a 4th year Arts and Social Science student. She has been involved with the Freshers Week welcome team, the Strathclyde Telegraph and is a proud TFI regular.
Having worked behind the bar in the QMU and been a sandwich artist (yes that was the job title), for O’Briens, she has first hand experience at serving the student population.
If elected, she will -
- Build up the union’s reputation as a live music venue drawing in more great bands
- Showcase new talent with an open mic night
- Screen Neighbours with sound/subtitles at lunchtime
- Keep great events like TFI Friday, 12 Hour Tuesday, X-mas All Nighter and Event in a Tent
- Keep 50p pints and introduce more Friday drink promos for people who don’t like lager
- Endeavour to keep the ladies toilets topped up with loo paper!
- Provide more seating
- Show more screenings of live sports events
- Have the biggest and best Freshers Week ever in 2008 that will welcome new students AND welcome back returning students.
If you want better union services
