Ask Volunteers

The Ask volunteer programme is one of our longest running and in many ways has set the standard for the Association as a whole. Volunteers work with our professional staff to ensure that students have access to the information and support they need to make decisions for themselves.

You don’t need and experience you just need to be keen to help other students and have an awareness of, and interest in, issues which affect students e.g. accommodation, sexual health and finance.

We also ask that volunteers attend training sessions throughout the year, you will also need to attend comprehensive training programme at the beginning of the year which equips you to deal effectively with a wide range of student enquiries.  Once you’ve done man the office on a rota basis once you are trained.  You will be able to call on support from Alison Urquhart and Nicola Summers the full time welfare advisers as well as Ursula Tereba the Vice President Support and Campaigns. There is also a network of support available through the University and other external agencies.

Becoming a welfare volunteer you will give you;

  • Transferable skills for use in the workplace.
  • Evidence on your CV of skills gained.
  • Show you can work as part of a team.
  • A better understanding of student issues.
  • An opportunity to get involved in campaigns and the development of the service.
