Security

If you are concerned about security of a property then talk to your landlord. It is in their interest as well as yours to ensure that the property is secure. Things to look out for are that windows and external doors are secure and if there is a burglar alarm.
You should security mark any valuable belongings. Information about crime prevention is available from your local police station or find out if your street is part of a neighbourhood watch scheme.
For personal safety, it is always advisable for you to view a property accompanied and try to arrange the appointment at a reasonable hour, although there are advantages to viewing it after dark in that you can get a feeling for how you will feel when walking home at night.

Insurance

  • Don't think of doing without it - the number of burglaries and thefts in student houses is rising.
  • Shop around to find the right insurance package for your requirements.
  • Make sure that you're covered over the vacations.

    Insuring your belongings before you move in and knowing exactly what you own and insuring EVERYTHING is always advised. Looking around and finding the policy to suit you is always the best option. It may be possible to extend your parents/spouse contents insurance to cover yourh1. Read the small print
    Whichever company you decide to go with, make sure you read the agreement carefully and understand exactly what you are covered for. If you under insure your belongings such as computers, bikes or CDs then you will have any subsequent claims reduced. Also, most companies have exclusion clauses and limitations so you should check these out before you sign anything. Look out for clauses which mean you possessions are uninsured if the property is unattended for a specified period of time or during vacationh1. What to do if you are burgled - practical steps

  • Report the incident to the police and your landlord
  • If credit cards and cheque cards have been stolen, inform the companies immediately.
  • Make a list of stolen items and details of damage to the property. You will need this for the police report, the insurance claim and for your landlord.
  • If you have contents insurance, telephone your insurers and request a claim form.
  • If you need emergency repairs contact your landlord or the agents immediately. Always put any request for repairs in writing
  • If any official documents such as your passport and driver's license have been stolen, contact the issuing authority as soon as possible.
