Statement Regarding Removal of Student Officer

Statement Regarding Removal of Student Officer

Raj Jeyaraj - President

Following a number of complaints, concerns raised by faith
groups, and media coverage into the involvement of the Vice President Volunteering
and Development of University of Strathclyde Students’ Association in an
anti-Semitic incident on campus, the Students’ Association complaints procedure
was invoked.  The finding of the
subsequent hearing was that the officer had brought the Union into disrepute
and that they were, as a result permanently incapacitated from holding elected
office in the Students’ Union.  An appeal
against this finding, chaired by a person independent of University of
Strathclyde Students' Association, was not upheld and the officer was therefore
removed from post with immediate effect.

The Trustee Board met on the 22nd June to consider the available
options for the post. Consideration was given to the importance of this post
and the need to have student leadership in this key area at the start of the
academic year.  The Board agreed that the
original election results for the vacated student officer post be considered
but with the disqualified elected officer removed.  This re-run election resulted in Liam McCabe
being elected as the Vice President Volunteering and Development for 2016/17.

This has been a challenging situation and experience for the
organisation; the Executive Committee have not sat on any of the disciplinary
hearing panels and as such have not participated in the verdict of guilt or the
associated penalty. University of Strathclyde Students' Association is proud of
and committed to our work to make Strathclyde a safe and inclusive environment.

The Executive Committee and Trustee Board, and our newly
appointed CEO who joins us from a faith-based community charity in Glasgow have
resolved to reach out to faith groups and to work with Jewish students and the
Jewish community in Strathclyde and beyond to combat racism and anti-Semitism,
and continue to work with the University of Strathclyde to support a safe and
inclusive student experience on campus.
