Universal Credit

What is Universal Credit?

If you have been thinking about making a claim for benefits after you finish University, then the new benefit you may be claiming is Universal Credit.

Universal credit is the new benefit being introduced by the government that will eventually completely replace some other benefits and is being introduced to single claimants only in Glasgow on the 8th of June 2015.

For more information please refer to Child Poverty Action Group factsheet

I’m already on another benefit, will this affect me?

At the moment Universal credit will be introduced to single people making a new claim but eventually Universal credit will replace all existing and new claims for:

  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Child Tax Credits
  • Working Tax Credits
  • Housing Benefit

If you’re already claiming one or more of these benefits, you should carry on claiming as normal. You’ll be told when you need to do anything differently.

What’s different about Universal Credit?

  • UC will be paid monthly into your bank account of choice, unlike JSA which is paid fortnightly.
  • If you get help with your rent or want to make a claim for help with your rent, this will be included in your monthly payment.
  • You will usually get your first payment one month and seven days after the date you first claim.

How to claim Universal Credit

If you are eligible for Universal Credit, you are expected to make your claim online on the Apply for Universal Credit website.
